Chapter 18

The purple-skinned alien was seated at his cluttered desk when Adam and the others entered. Halif pushed back from the desk and eyed the four Humans nervously.

“You appear to have increased in number,” he said to Adam. “What shall I discern from that? You must understand my earlier protests were over concerns for the safety of all in the spaceport. It was not directed personally at you.”

Adam’s ATD noticed a circuit open under the desk when Halif pressed a panic button. One did not maintain control of the largest spaceport on Resnor without employing a small army of security guards. Adam cut the circuit. The signal went out, but it only lasted for a split second. No one would notice.

Adam and Sherri took seats in front of the desk while Riyad and Mike stood ominously against the back wall, hands resting on the stocks of their MK flash weapons. Halif noticed.

“Relax, Harbor Master, we’re just here for some information,” Adam said with a grin. He bared his teeth which made the alien twitch in his seat. Was this a death challenge? If so, Halif was in no position to press the issue. Besides, he would be stupid to do so.

“What kind of information?”

“Xan-fi, they have their supply ships land here. We need information about that, such as location and time schedules.”

Halif shook his head. “As the Harbor Master, I am forbidden from disclosing client details such as that. You are a client, as well. You would not want me to disclose details of your visit, would you.”

“No, I wouldn’t. But I still want to know about Xan-fi, and I don’t care whether you can or can’t disclose that information. You’re the Harbor Master. You can do what you want.”

“Not if I wish to remain Harbor Master.”

Sherri leaned forward and placed her hands on the desk. “When we first arrived, you said you didn’t know who we were. I’m guessing that you’ve checked us out since then.”

“That is correct.”

“Then you already know you’re going to tell us what we need. The only question is how much is it going to hurt?”

“Why do you threaten me? I have always been a friend to the Humans. I like Humans; you are interesting creatures.”

“What other Humans do you know?” Riyad asked.

“I know the one known as Copernicus Smith. I am not without reason. Your arrival corresponded too closely with his disappearance. I suspect you are here because of him. I will save you time and effort. I have not seen him since the night of his disappearance. He came to see me seeking work with Cartel ships. After the events of that evening, I concluded he was dead.”

“But you’re someone with contacts,” Adam said. “That means you know he’s been captured.”

Halif nodded. “Yes, it is common knowledge. The reward has gone to someone else.”

“You were looking for him, too?” Sherri asked.

“All of Dashious was looking for him. That was the reason for the reward.”

“What else do you know about his capture?” Sherri continued.

“Nothing. News has circulated that he was captured and that there is no more reward.
